Gum inflammation, periodontitis and tongues, but also head and joint pain, fatigue, immunodeficiency and allergies can be the result of sensitization to dental materials.
Without dentures it does not work!
Despite all the prophylactic measures, it is regularly necessary to supply or replace teeth with fillings. All materials used for this purpose require approval. They must be checked for biocompatibility and may only be used with a corresponding certificate.
Despite this test and optimum dental processing, however, individual sensitivities to these materials can not be excluded. Some people do not tolerate gold, palladium or even platinum, while others react to basic materials.
Biocompatibility does not exclude allergies!
Incompatibility of dentures can be the result of a rarely toxic reaction. It is much more frequent, however, due to an allergic reaction to a nice tooth replacement.
These allergic reactions can not be ruled out in a biocompatibility test that they occur only in a few patients. Allergy-triggering may be metals, but also various acrylates, which are contained in plastics. In principle, any material introduced into the mouth could trigger an allergic reaction.
Since allergies are entirely individual reactions, terms such as “organic gold” or “hypoallergenic plastic” may be deceptive, since these materials only minimize the individual risk of an allergy.
Who can be affected?
To date, it is not known why some people develop sensitization to metals, basic substances or other allergens. It is certain that genetic factors play a role, and that the body is showing an adequate, overwhelming response to different foreign roads.
In most cases it was a so-called “Spatypallergies”. On contact, the body has formed individual memory cells on metals, plastics or also cements. He obviously can not tolerate these materials. In the case of a second or continuous contact with these materials, the formation of many white blood cells (T-lymphocytes) is triggered by the memory cells.
The resulting whole-body symptoms, such as inflammation, pain, swelling, or flu-like general symptoms, are part of the immune response, which aims at eliminating invaded and “foreign” antigens.
How can one examine whether the body reacts to the material?
A modern and more accurate method of analysis is the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT). In this test, immuno-cells are obtained from a blood sample in the laboratory and brought together with suspicious metals, plastics or other materials. Using modern immunological methods, we measure whether your white blood cells (T lymphocytes) react to the appropriate material. If so, there is awareness.
The LTT complements the perfect diagnostics
The LTT is a laboratory method accredited according to DIN 15189, which is only carried out in specially equipped laboratories. Your dental practice works closely with the Institute for Medical Diagnostics in Berlin and uses the LTT in the spectrum of the diagnostic repertoire to determine the most diverse allergic sensitizations.
Direct testing of “your” materials is possible
In addition to standard profiles on frequently used metals or plastics, LTT also allows the testing of patient-specific and even already processed dental restorative materials.
What does the test tell me?
The result LTT provides information on which materials you have an allergic sensitization to which they do not react.
In the case of a positive test result, already processed materials, we will discuss with them whether a distance is advised or if further examination is necessary.
Sensitization usually lasts for a lifetime!
We will consider the results of the LTT examination during our therapy. But they should not be forgotten in the future. Therefore, positive tester results are documented accordingly and should be submitted by you at any future dental visit.
What should I do?
For the lymphocyte transformation test, you only need a blood sample, which can be taken by us, your family doctor or in the laboratory.
Information for legally ill patients:
Some medical services are no longer covered by statutory health insurance funds without corresponding additional tariffs. This includes almost all modern medical laboratory analyzes, which are performed in the context of periodontal diseases, incompatibility of dental implants and implantations. Your treating physician or dentist will advise you whether the appropriate analysis is required in your case. If you opt for the examination, the costs will be billed to you personally.
